Globo's Centennial Celebration: Unveiling a Global Vision
A century of storytelling, a future of global impact.
In a vibrant showcase at Mipcom, Globo, the Brazilian communications powerhouse, celebrated its 100th anniversary with a bang. But here's where it gets controversial: Globo's journey from a humble newspaper to a global entertainment giant is just the beginning of a new chapter.
The Brazilian Battle for Global Recognition
Brazil, a country as vast as a continent, has embarked on a mission to leave its mark on the world stage. For Globo, this means expanding beyond its renowned telenovelas while ensuring their continued success. It's a delicate balance, but one that Globo is determined to achieve.
One strategy? Format deals. Globo's Head of International Business, Angela Colla, emphasized the importance of these deals, stating, "This year has been pivotal in solidifying our presence in the format sales business."
Unveiling New Partnerships: Anonymous Content, BBC, and Fox
In a series of exciting announcements, Globo revealed its international collaborations. One notable partnership is with Anonymous Content for a U.S. adaptation of "The Others," a gripping tale of intolerance set in a Rio suburb. The format has already found success in Germany and Greece.
Additionally, Globo's revenge saga "Leyla," inspired by the telenovela "Brazil Avenue," has gained global recognition, selling to over 20 countries. The company has also secured deals for "All the Flowers" and "Pages of Life," showcasing its diverse range of entertainment offerings.
Global Co-Productions: Joining Forces with the Best
Globo is taking its global ambitions further with co-productions. Ron Leshem, the creator of the original "Euphoria," will collaborate with Janeiro Studios and Globoplay to produce "Paranoia." This project promises a unique blend of intense drama and feel-good moments.
Furthermore, Globo and Fox Entertainment Studios have joined hands to develop an original Christmas movie set in Brazil. The goal? To capture the authentic Brazilian culture and traditions, especially the country's unique summer Christmas celebrations.
And this is the part most people miss: BBC Studios and Globo signed a groundbreaking co-production deal for a doc series exploring Brazil's Amazon rainforest. Janet Brown, President of Global Content Sales at BBC Studios, described it as a series that "will transport audiences to the heart of Brazil's natural wonder."
New Shows, New Success
Globo's new shows are making waves. "Perfect Days," an abduction thriller, has become the most-watched original series on Globoplay, showcasing a different side of Globo's audiovisual prowess. Similarly, "Anything Goes," a remake of a 1980s hit, achieved impressive viewership figures.
A Commitment to Quality and Diversity
At the Mipcom Showcase, Angela Colla emphasized Globo's dedication to quality storytelling. "We tell stories responsibly, connecting with diverse audiences. Our diversity extends beyond content and genres; it encompasses business models too."
As Globo embarks on its second century, its global vision is clearer than ever. But what do you think? Is Globo's future as bright as its past? Share your thoughts in the comments!
