Here's where it gets controversial: Nurse managers make assignments based on various factors, but the fairness of these decisions is inconsistent. This lack of equity can further contribute to nurse dissatisfaction and burnout.

A team of nurses, led by Sharon Catherine Le Roux, DNP, RN, OCN®, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, took on this challenge. They developed an automated patient-nurse assignment tool to tackle staffing issues in surgical oncology.

The tool uses dynamic nursing documentation within the electronic medical record to calculate a workload score, predicting a nurse's upcoming workload intensity and providing real-time patient needs information. This innovative approach aims to optimize staffing and improve nurse well-being.

In a study involving 41 nurses, the automated assignments resulted in a balanced workload, with 75% of nurses expressing satisfaction. The tool also showed that nurses experienced improved satisfaction with assignments and reduced physical health issues interfering with their work. Furthermore, nurses reported higher levels of equitable assignments and accurate acuity levels, contributing to a sense of meaningful work.
