Tuesday's League One/League Two/National League reports (2024)

League One

Accrington Stanley 0-1 Rochdale

Oliver Rathbone's strike moved Rochdale out of the League One relegation zone with victory over relegation rivals Accrington.

On a tense night, the midfielder rifled home his sixth goal of the season in the 71st minute after the determined Aaron Wilbraham had worked hard in the area to set him up.

Brian Barry-Murphy's side move up to 19th place with Stanley just two places above them, level on points.

Dale keeper Josh Lillis was in action early on, parrying away a Sean McConville effort. But Dale grew into the game, Matt Done firing narrowly wide before Bulgarian keeper Dimitar Evtimov pulled off a superb one-handed save to keep out Ryan McLaughlin's deflected shot.

Reds winger Jordan Clark had two good chances but could not find the target with either.

Both sides went on the hunt for the winner after the break with Lillis doing well to keep out a Luke Armstrong effort from close range before Rathbone took his chance.

Stanley then pressed for an equaliser, Ross Sykes heading just wide, but it did not come.

Sunderland 1-1 Burton Albion

Sunderland climbed up to second in League One despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Burton.

The Black Cats, who came from behind to claim three points at Rochdale on Saturday, fell behind once again when defender Tom Flanagan turned a Marcus Harness cross into his own net in the 19th minute.

But Sunderland, who still have a game in hand over Barnsley in third, pulled level eight minutes later when defender Jack Baldwin headed in a Grant Leadbitter corner.

Sunderland pushed on in the closing stages in the hope of hitting a winner like they did at Rochdale.

But there was to be no late breakthrough despite a Leadbitter effort that hit the foot of the post.

Sunderland's goal led a charmed life at times too, Burton having had numerous good chances earlier in the match, the best of which was Harness having an effort cleared off the line by Baldwin.

Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Charlton Athletic

Jason Pearce scored a first-half winner as promotion-chasing Charlton earned a third straight win with a 1-0 victory at Wycombe.

The Addicks skipper slotted home from Josh Cullen's 35th-minute cross to all but guarantee a top-six finish for the south London club.

Igor Vetokele had earlier been denied by a fine save from Ryan Allsop after being set up by Lyle Taylor.

But Wycombe, who have serious relegation concerns after extending their winless run to 12 games, should have rescued a point.

Adebayo Akinfenwa saw a header from Nick Freeman's cross go over while Scott Kashket's effort from point-blank range hit Charlton keeper Dillon Phillips at the start of the second half.

Akinfenwa then had another header saved by Phillips who also denied Chairboys captain Adam El-Abd as Wycombe's misfortune in front of goal continued.

Charlton should have sealed victory late on when Pearce's header from Cullen's corner was kept out by Allsop moments after Vetokele had also headed wide.

League Two

Macclesfield Town 3-2 Exeter City

Harry Smith's late strike helped Macclesfield climb out of the League Two relegation zone for the first time since August after a 3-2 home win over Exeter City.

Sol Campbell's side, now unbeaten in five games, twice came from behind to move up to 22nd, two points clear of Yeovil Town and Notts County.

Exeter started the better of the two sides, and their dominance was rewarded midway through the first half when Ryan Bowman headed home a Lee Martin cross to put the visitors ahead.

Macclesfield responded well and found themselves level three minutes later when a Ben Stephens cross was headed in by Smith.

The Grecians restored their advantage four minutes later when a long goal kick evaded the Macclesfield defence and Bowman pounced to score his second of the game from 12 yards.

Macclesfield pulled themselves level once more on the stroke of half time when Michael Rose converted from the penalty spot after Nathan Cameron was fouled in the area.

A second half of few chances was rounded off when the Silkmen got the winner five minutes from time, Smith heading home his second of the evening from Elliott Durrell's cross.

Newport County 0-0 Swindon Town

Newport County held Swindon Town to a goalless draw as both teams failed to create much in the way of scoring opportunities.

County lost both Jamille Matt and Joss Labadie in an injury-hit first half as both teams struggled at Rodney Parade.

Joe Day was the Newport hero, not for the first time this season, with 20 minutes left, when his double save from Dion Conroy kept the scores level.

Newport remain 13th in League Two, two points behind Swindon, who stay 10th.

National League

Gateshead 0-1 AFC Fylde

AFC Fylde climbed to fourth in the National League with a narrow victory at Gateshead.

Nick Haughton scored what proved to be the winner in the 31st minute with his second goal of the season.

Jon Mellish came close to an equaliser after a corner from Greg Olley fell to the full-back who fired over from six yards.

Gateshead are now winless in five games, while Fylde have closed the gap on third-placed Solihull Moors to three points.

Leyton Orient 3-2 Eastleigh

Leyton Orient twice came from behind to secure all three points in a thrilling win over Eastleigh to move top of the National League table.

Eastleigh took the lead in the sixth minute through Paul McCallum, moments after the striker had seen a header cleared off the line.

Soon after Josh Koroma tapped in an equaliser at the back post following a long through ball, only for McCallum to score his and Eastleigh's second in the 21st minute.

Macauley Bonne struck a second equaliser with his 22nd league goal of the season before James Brophy netted what proved to the winner in the 61st minute.

Maidstone United 2-1 Barnet

Relegated Maidstone came from behind to beat Barnet 2-1 at the Hive, recording their first win in six National League matches despite missing a penalty.

The Bees took the lead in the opening minute of the game through Medy Elito, who found space at the edge of the box to fire a shot straight into the top right hand corner.

Blair Turgott missed the opportunity for his 12th goal of the season, after his penalty was saved by Barnet goalkeeper Mark Cousins.

Justin Amaluzor struck the equaliser for Maidstone at the start of the second half before Rob Swaine nodded in a free-kick for the game's decisive third goal in the 70th minute.
